UCO to Honor 9/11 Victims with Flag Planting, Activities
Sept. 6, 2024
The University of Central Oklahoma invites the Edmond and Oklahoma City metro communities to join UCO students, faculty and staff in honoring the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The commemoration will begin with a stair run at 8 a.m., Sept. 11, at Chad Richison Stadium, followed by a flag-planting ceremony and reflection walk at 9 a.m., at the Clock Tower near Broncho Lake, both located on Central’s campus.
The stair run, hosted by the UCO Army Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (ROTC) Broncho Battalion, will honor 9/11 first responders by climbing 110 flights of stairs—the same as those on the day of the attack.
Those who wish to attend the flag planting and reflection walk will plant approximately 3,000 American flags in the ground around Broncho Lake in remembrance of those who lost their lives on 9/11.
"This year marks the 23rd anniversary of 9/11, a day that remains etched in our collective memory," said UCO President Todd G. Lamb. "For many of us, the events of that day are unforgettable, yet most of our students were not even born when it occurred. This makes it all the more vital for our community to honor and remember, passing on our memories to the next generation. By doing so, we provide them with a profound opportunity to learn, reflect and gain perspective on the impact of that day."
The Central community will also participate in a service activity that provides meals to each of the five local Edmond fire stations.
