UCO Theatre Arts Presents ‘Dracula: A Feminist Revenge Fantasy, Really,’ Oct. 29-Nov. 1

The University of Central Oklahoma Department of Theatre Arts will present Kate Hamill’s “Dracula: A Feminist Revenge Fantasy, Really” at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 29-31, and 2 p.m., Nov. 1, in Mitchell Hall Theatre on Central’s campus.
A reimagining of Bram Stoker’s gothic classic, the production asks what happens when the women at the story's center recognize the danger posed by Count Dracula and decide to fight back. When Dracula sets his sights on England, Mina Harker, Lucy Westenra and an unlikely ally must confront a predator who uses charm, control and manipulation to get what he wants.
Part horror and part dark comedy, Hamill’s adaptation brings a contemporary perspective to a story audiences have known for more than a century. The production reframes one of literature’s most iconic villains while giving its heroines the opportunity to take control of their own stories.
The production is directed by Kelsey Fisher-Waits, M.F.A., instructor of performance in the UCO Department of Theatre Arts.
“‘Dracula: A Feminist Revenge Fantasy, Really’ takes a story we think we know and asks us to look at it from a different perspective,” Fisher-Waits said.
“It’s funny, insightful, campy, vampy, sometimes uncomfortable and, overall, very entertaining. On the surface, it's an exciting new adaptation of a fan-favorite tale, but at its heart, it’s about women recognizing their own power and refusing to let anyone else define their stories. I’m excited for our students to bring Hamill’s sharp, contemporary voice to the stage and invite audiences to see this familiar story with a brand new bite."
The production is recommended for ages 16 and older due to strong language, violence and blood, use of weapons, horror themes, sexual situations and mature content, death and references to suicide. The production also features flashing lights, theatrical fog and loud sound effects.
