UCO Presents ‘Anything Goes’ as Part of Broadway Tonight, Sept. 25-Oct. 4

The University of Central Oklahoma musical theatre program will present Cole Porter’s classic musical comedy “Anything Goes” as part of Broadway Tonight at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 25-26 and Oct. 2-3, and 2 p.m., Sept. 27 and Oct. 4, in Mitchell Hall Theatre on Central’s campus.
Set aboard the ocean liner S.S. American, “Anything Goes” follows Billy Crocker, who stows away to win the heart of his love, Hope Harcourt, before she marries another man. With the help of nightclub singer Reno Sweeney, a disguised gangster and an eccentric crew, Crocker navigates a series of mistaken identities, unexpected romances and comic complications.
The production is directed and choreographed by special guest director Steven Smeltzer, an award-winning director, choreographer and educator who has worked professionally in New York City and on national and international stages for more than 30 years. Smeltzer previously served on the UCO Musical Theatre faculty and has directed and choreographed numerous musical productions, bringing his professional experience to UCO students through the Broadway Tonight program.
“‘Anything Goes’ is the kind of musical that gives everyone involved a chance to play, create and have fun,” Smeltzer said.
“With Cole Porter’s unforgettable music and larger-than-life characters, this production is an opportunity to celebrate the joy of live theatre while bringing a fresh perspective to a classic story.”
The production features music and lyrics by Cole Porter, including well-known songs such as “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “You’re the Top,” “It’s De-Lovely,” “Blow, Gabriel, Blow” and “Anything Goes.”
“Anything Goes” is part of UCO Broadway Tonight, a program that connects UCO students with professional artists through collaborative production experiences.
The production is also part of the yearlong celebration of the 100th anniversary of Mitchell Hall Theatre, which has served generations of UCO students, performers and audiences since opening in 1926.
Tickets range from $15 to $40 and can be purchased online at BronchoArts.com or by calling 405-974-3375. UCO students receive one free ticket with a valid student ID.
The production is recommended for ages 13 and older due to mild language, sexual innuendo, suggestive humor, depictions of smoking and alcohol consumption, comic violence including gunshots and a brief mention of suicide.
