The University of Central Oklahoma has named the Dr. Kathleen Black Healthy Campus Trails in honor of a longtime faculty member, dedicated supporter and champion of health and wellness.

Located at Plunkett Park on Central’s campus, the trails are part of UCO’s broader healthy campus initiative and are designed to promote physical activity, connection and well-being among students, faculty, staff and the Edmond community.

The celebration began with a ceremonial first walk led by Kathleen Black, Ed.D., professor emerita, followed by a formal dedication ceremony recognizing Black’s lasting contributions to UCO and the field of health and physical education.

“We are proud to officially dedicate the Dr. Kathleen Black Healthy Campus Trails, a meaningful investment in the well-being of our university and community,” said UCO President Todd G. Lamb.

“These trails honor Dr. Black’s lifelong commitment to health, movement, education and service—values that align with UCO’s mission and commitment to building a healthy campus. Dr. Black is a gentle force that had earned by deed and example a lifetime of health and fitness. This is a well-deserved legacy.”

Black served UCO for more than four decades before retiring in 2001 as a professor emerita. Throughout her career, she was recognized as a leader in health, physical activity and education, earning numerous state and national awards. In retirement, she has remained actively involved with the university through mentorship, service and philanthropy, including establishing an endowed scholarship to support future educators.

The Bronze (1-mile) and Blue (1.55-mile) trails provide a welcoming space for recreation, reflection and connection.

“Dr. Black’s legacy extends far beyond the classroom,” said Allen Wright, vice president for Advancement at UCO.

“This trail stands as a lasting tribute to her impact on UCO and will serve as a resource for our campus and community for years to come.”
