The University of Central Oklahoma Foundation has announced a transformative, multi-year commitment from alumnus Vagan Tapaltsyan, DDS, Ph.D., to expand undergraduate research opportunities for biology students while honoring the faculty mentor who helped shape his career.

Through his generous pledge, Tapaltsyan will provide long-term support for the Dr. Gregory Wilson Research Fellowship, ensuring future generations of UCO students have opportunities to engage in faculty-mentored biological research. In recognition of his generosity and lasting impact on the university, Howell Hall Room 201 will be designated the Dr. Vagan Tapaltsyan Lecture Hall.

The investment demonstrates the lasting impact philanthropy can have on students, faculty and the future of the university. For Tapaltsyan, both the gift and recognition are deeply personal.

“My experience at UCO helped shape the course of my life, providing opportunities, relationships and lessons that continue to influence me today. Supporting the university is my way of giving back to a place that invested so much in my success,” Tapaltsyan said.

“I hope this fellowship continues to create meaningful opportunities for students to pursue scientific research, build lasting relationships with faculty mentors and prepare for successful careers. It is exciting to invest in the next generation of researchers and help advance UCO’s tradition of undergraduate research. The honor of Howell Hall 201 carrying my name is deeply personal, also, as that place holds so many memories and firsts, such as one of my first scientific conference presentations and induction into the Tri-Beta Biological Honor Society.”

A first-generation immigrant who earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from UCO before completing both his Doctor of Dental Surgery and Ph.D. in Craniofacial Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, Tapaltsyan credits the mentorship and research experiences he received at Central as the foundation of his professional success.

Today, he is an internationally recognized maxillofacial implant surgeon, researcher and educator whose work focuses on advancing tooth and bone regeneration.

The Dr. Gregory Wilson Research Fellowship supports undergraduate students pursuing biological research and related scientific disciplines. Through hands-on research experiences, students develop skills in experimental design, data analysis, scientific communication and problem-solving while preparing for graduate study and careers in healthcare, biotechnology and scientific research.

“Dr. Tapaltsyan’s generosity honors the mentor who helped shape his journey while opening doors for countless students who will follow,” said Allen Wright, vice president of the UCO Office for Advancement and president of the UCO Foundation.

“Gifts like this strengthen UCO’s ability to prepare future leaders, advance discovery and invest in the people and ideas that will shape Oklahoma’s future. His commitment is a powerful example of how philanthropy builds lasting momentum for our students and our university.”

The gift reinforces the UCO Foundation’s mission to connect donor generosity with opportunities that transform lives. Through the Dr. Gregory Wilson Research Fellowship, future Bronchos will gain the mentorship and hands-on research experiences that prepare them to become innovators, healthcare professionals and scientific leaders.

The University of Central Oklahoma is a campus community in motion—leading, innovating and creating transformative learning opportunities that foster success for our students. As Oklahoma’s largest metropolitan university, we provide high-quality, nationally recognized programs that are always evolving and adapting to the needs of our students and the community. This commitment is rooted in our founding in 1890 as the state’s teacher’s college, training those who would educate the next generation of leaders and innovators. We remain dedicated to offering an accessible, affordable education, earning national accolades for social mobility, veterans’ outreach and first-generation student programs.

Guided by the motto “ubi motus est” – which translates to “where movement is” – the university continues to evolve and grow, offering 119 undergraduate and 81 graduate programs to our more than 12,000 students from our main campus in Edmond, Oklahoma, and facilities throughout the Oklahoma City metro. Our colors were the first adopted of any university in the state, and our Bronze and Blue symbolize our greatest strengths—the illumination of new ideas and the endless expanse of a clear sky above. At UCO, anything is possible.

The university is governed by the Regional University System of Oklahoma Board of Regents and accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
